Basketball background

Basketball Subculture

This case explores the culture and daily experiences of basketball players through ethnographic research

Overview

An ethnographic deep dive into basketball culture, uncovering how the sport shapes identity, teamwork, and lifestyle and how thoughtful stadium design can elevate both player and fan experiences.

Roles and Methods

Ethnographic Research, Participant Observation, Semi-Structured Interviews, Data Synthesis, Persona Creation, Co-Creation, Insight Generation, Experience Design Exploration.

Timeline

8 weeks

Process

Setup

To explore the basketball subculture, I used a user-centered ethnographic approach, starting with assumptions and desk research to understand basketball as both a sport and social identity. I then observed a practice session, capturing behaviors, rituals, and interactions on and off the court.

Interviews

In the following weeks, I conducted two in-depth interviews: one with a basketball player, exploring his routines, emotions, and team dynamics; and another with an ex-player, who sketched his ideal stadium, revealing insights into accessibility, multifunctional spaces, fan experience, and the role of technology.

Data Cards

Insights

Throughout the research process, I synthesized findings into data cards, reflected on recurring patterns, and developed key insights. These learnings helped shape a vision for designing more inclusive, functional, and culturally relevant basketball environments for both players and fans.

Reflection

This research helped me understand the deeper cultural and emotional layers of basketball. It improved my interviewing skills, revealed the value of real user stories, and showed how design can better reflect the needs and identities of both players and fans.

Jazzkeep Festival app

A digital tool designed to help jazz festival visitors explore the lineup, get personalized tips, and connect more deeply with the music and atmosphere.

Overview

An interactive jazz festival tool combining personalized lineup planning and a fully customizable NFC-connected locker system all managed directly through the user’s phone.

Roles and Methods

UX Research, UI Design, Prototyping,
Interaction Design, User Testing,
NFC Integration Concept, User Interviews,
Wireframing (Figma)

Timeline

8 weeks

Process

Setup

This concept was created as part of a design challenge to enhance the jazz festival experience through digital tools. The goal was to explore how technology can support both planning and immersion from personalized schedules and artist discovery to a smart NFC-enabled locker system controlled entirely through a mobile interface.

Prototyping

Designed in Figma, the prototype offered a smooth festival experience with features like personalized lineups, artist previews, an interactive map, and an NFC-enabled locker customizable via phone. The visual style echoed the flow of jazz, combining soft tones and intuitive navigation to enhance user engagement.

Research

Through user interviews, I found that festival-goers highly value security and personalization. An NFC-controlled locker, accessible only via their phone, felt both safe and convenient. People also appreciated integrated tech that simplifies their experience, from planning to contactless access.

Reflection

This project showed me how even a simple idea, like a locker, can become meaningful when connected to real user needs. By listening closely, I learned that security, trust, and tech-driven convenience can shape how people feel during an event — and that small digital touches can make a big impact.

Design brief

We designed a digital cinema platform to support a UK cinema chain’s expansion into the Dutch market, creating a localized experience focused on personalized movie discovery, social group bookings, loyalty rewards, and a seamless, intuitive user journey. The platform blends modern UX principles with cultural adaptation to meet the expectations of Dutch digital natives.

Card sorting & User stories

We created user stories to map the needs of Dutch cinema-goers, focusing on personalization, group bookings, loyalty rewards, and accessibility. Through card sorting sessions with real users, we developed a clear and intuitive content structure, helping us design a platform that makes movie discovery faster, easier, and more personalized.

Research

We explored Dutch cinema-goers’ habits through user stories, task analysis, and creativity techniques like brainwriting. Research showed a strong demand for personalized recommendations, easy group bookings with split payments, loyalty rewards, and a seamless browsing experience. Card sorting sessions helped organize content intuitively, ensuring users can quickly find movies and plan their visits effortlessly.

Prototyping

Based on user research and concept development, we created wireframes and built a high-fidelity clickable prototype in Figma. The prototype focused on smooth movie discovery, personalized suggestions, group bookings with seat suggestions, loyalty tracking, and a fun swipe-based movie exploration feature. Visual design emphasized clarity, personalization, and a modern, intuitive experience for digital-native users.
